The words "kitchen remodel" and "cost" mean different things to different homeowners. Some picture a fresh coat of paint and new hardware. Others picture a wall coming down and a new island going in. The price you pay follows the choices you make, in that order.
Most kitchen remodels in Southeast Indiana land between $28,000 and $95,000. A surface refresh keeping the current layout runs $28K to $45K. A full remodel with new cabinets, countertops, and appliances hits $50K to $75K. Move walls, plumbing, or gas lines and you're looking at $80K to $95K or more.
Why "Kitchen Remodel and Cost" Isn't One Number
A kitchen remodel isn't a product on a shelf. It's a bundle of decisions. Cabinets alone can range from $8,000 to $40,000 in the same footprint. Countertops shift by a factor of three depending on stone. And that's before layout changes, appliances, or the wiring that hasn't been touched since the house was built.
When homeowners in Lawrenceburg or Aurora ask us for a ballpark, we always ask two questions back: what are you keeping, and what are you moving? Those two answers get us within 15 percent of the real number every time.
The Three Cost Tiers We See in Southeast Indiana
Over close to three decades of remodeling kitchens across Dearborn County and the Cincinnati tri-state area, we see kitchen budgets fall into three natural tiers. Here's what each one buys you in a typical Southeast Indiana home.
Cabinet refacing or paint, new countertops, new sink and faucet, updated lighting, new backsplash. Keep the layout, keep the appliances, keep the flooring if it's holding up. Best for kitchens with good bones that just feel dated.
New semi-custom cabinets, quartz or granite countertops, new appliance package, new flooring, tile backsplash, updated lighting and electrical. Plumbing stays where it is. This is where most of our kitchen projects land.
Wall removal, new island, moved plumbing and gas lines, custom cabinetry, premium stone, professional-grade appliances, and often a structural beam. Also covers kitchens opening to a dining or living space.
What Actually Drives the Number
Two kitchens the same size can quote out $30,000 apart. Here's what really moves the price, in the order we see it matter most.
Cabinets. This is usually the single biggest line on any kitchen remodel. Stock cabinets from a big box store run $8,000 to $15,000 for a typical kitchen. Semi-custom lands at $15,000 to $28,000. Full custom or inset cabinetry can hit $35,000 to $50,000 in the same space.
Countertops. Laminate is nearly gone in Southeast Indiana kitchens. Most homeowners choose quartz ($55 to $95 per square foot installed) or granite ($50 to $80). Premium marble, quartzite, or specialty stone easily doubles that. A 40 square foot countertop can swing $3,000 to $7,000 based on material alone.
Layout changes. Moving the sink 8 feet means opening walls, rerouting drain and supply lines, and often relocating the vent stack. Add $3,000 to $8,000. Taking out a load-bearing wall for an open concept adds $6,000 to $15,000 once you factor engineering, the beam, and drywall repair.
Appliances. A basic four-piece package runs $3,500 to $6,000. A pro-style range with a matching hood, panel-ready fridge, and built-in coffee station easily crosses $18,000. This is the line item you have the most control over.
What's behind the walls. Kitchens in older Dearborn County homes often have knob-and-tube wiring, undersized breakers, or galvanized supply lines. Once demo opens the walls, code updates get added to the invoice. Budget $2,000 to $5,000 for this on any home built before 1980.
The gap between a $45,000 kitchen and a $75,000 kitchen isn't always what you see. Half the time it's what you don't, like the wiring, the subfloor, or the venting.
How Timing Fits Into Cost
A kitchen remodel is one of the few home projects where timeline drives price almost as much as materials do. The longer the kitchen is out of commission, the more meals out, the more temporary setups, and the more chances for change orders.
A Tier 1 refresh takes 3 to 5 weeks. A Tier 2 full remodel takes 6 to 10 weeks once cabinets arrive. A Tier 3 with structural changes and custom cabinetry can stretch to 4 months. Cabinet lead time is usually the pacing item. Order early, and the project actually starts sooner.
Financing timelines matter too. If you're using a home equity line or a renovation loan, get pre-approved before you're deep into design. It keeps the project moving and it tells the contractor what tier is realistic.
How to Match Scope to Budget
Most homeowners we meet in Lawrenceburg have a number in mind and a Pinterest board that doesn't match it. Both are useful. The job is closing the gap honestly.
- Start with the tier, then design the kitchen. Picking finishes before you know the tier is how projects blow up. Set the budget, then choose within it.
- Splurge on cabinets, save on hardware. Cabinets are permanent and hard to change. Pulls and knobs swap out in an afternoon.
- Keep the plumbing where it is if you can. Every fixture you leave in place saves $1,500 to $4,000.
- Skip the built-in coffee station unless you actually make espresso. A great countertop machine costs less and does more.
- Build a 10 to 15 percent contingency into the number. Older homes surface surprises. New homes surface change orders. Either way, you'll spend it.
- Get a line-item bid. "Cabinets: $22,000" is a bid. "Kitchen: $60,000" is a wish.
