If you are asking "how much is a kitchen remodel," you want a real number before a sales pitch. Here is what a kitchen remodel actually costs in Southeast Indiana in 2026 — and why the same square footage can come in at $30K or $90K depending on what you choose.
Most kitchen remodels in Southeast Indiana run $25,000 to $95,000+. A cosmetic refresh (paint, hardware, countertops, appliances) lands around $25K to $40K. A full pull-and-replace with new cabinets, layout tweaks, and quality finishes runs $50K to $80K. A high-end remodel with layout changes, custom cabinetry, and premium materials often crosses $95K.
Three real kitchen remodel price tiers
Every kitchen remodel quote falls into one of three tiers. The tier is set by three things: whether the layout stays the same, the quality of cabinets, and the finish level on countertops and appliances.
Same layout. New countertops, backsplash, hardware, sink, faucet, and appliances. Existing cabinets stay (paint or refinish). Paint, lighting, and flooring updates included.
Same footprint, everything new. Semi-custom cabinets, quartz countertops, tile backsplash, mid-range appliance package, new lighting, new flooring. Minor plumbing and electrical shifts.
Walls moved, island added, or footprint expanded. Custom cabinets, natural stone, high-end appliances, dedicated pantry or coffee bar, upgraded electrical, hardwood flooring.
Most homeowners in Dearborn County land in Tier 2. It is the sweet spot: new cabinets, real quartz, a quality appliance package, and everything looks and functions like a new kitchen — without the price tag of moving walls.
What actually drives the number
The tier gives you a range. Inside the range, five things move the price up or down.
- Cabinets. This is the single biggest line item — usually 30 to 40 percent of the total. Stock cabinets run $6K to $12K for a mid-sized kitchen. Semi-custom runs $15K to $30K. Full custom starts at $30K and climbs from there.
- Countertops. Laminate is $30 to $50 per square foot installed. Quartz is $70 to $120. Natural stone (marble, quartzite) is $90 to $200+. A 40-square-foot kitchen counter is a $1,200 to $8,000 spread just on material.
- Appliances. A mid-range four-piece package (fridge, range, dishwasher, microwave) is $4K to $7K. A premium package (Bosch, KitchenAid, GE Cafe) is $10K to $18K. Sub-Zero and Wolf easily crosses $30K.
- Layout changes. Moving a sink or range costs $1,500 to $4,000 in plumbing and electrical rerouting. Removing a wall is $3,000 to $15,000+ depending on whether it is load-bearing.
- Flooring and lighting. New flooring across a 200 sq ft kitchen runs $3K to $8K. Recessed lighting plus a new fixture is $1,500 to $4,000.
Two neighbors on the same street can spend $35,000 and $85,000 on the same-size kitchen. The difference is cabinet grade and whether the walls stayed put.
Why prices went up in 2026
If you are comparing a 2020 quote to a 2026 quote, the number will feel steep. It is not a markup — the underlying costs really moved.
Cabinet lead times shortened but material costs are up 15 to 25 percent since 2020. Quartz and stone are up 10 to 20 percent. Skilled trades — plumbers, electricians, tile setters — cost 25 to 40 percent more per hour than they did five years ago. That is what a quality remodel actually costs today.
The good news: a well-built kitchen in Southeast Indiana still returns 60 to 75 percent of its cost at resale, and every day you live in it before selling.
What is not in most quotes
Homeowners get surprised when a quote grows mid-project. Almost always it is one of these items — things a fast estimate skips.
- Permits and inspections. $200 to $800 in Dearborn County, more in Cincinnati jurisdictions.
- Wall repair and paint. After demo, drywall almost always needs work. Budget $1,500 to $3,000.
- Electrical panel upgrade. Older homes sometimes need a service upgrade before code will allow a new range or double oven. $2,500 to $5,000.
- Plumbing rework. Cast iron drain lines under a slab often need replacing once you open the kitchen. $1,500 to $4,000.
- Change orders. Every project has them. Budget 10 percent of the contract as a real cushion.
A good contractor puts an allowance for permits and a contingency line right on the quote. If you do not see one, ask why.
Where to spend and where to save
Not every dollar in a kitchen remodel earns the same return. Here is where the money is worth it in a Southeast Indiana home — and where you can hold back without regret.
- Spend on cabinets. They set the entire look and are the hardest thing to change later. Semi-custom in a mid-range door style is the sweet spot.
- Spend on the range and hood. This is what you use every day. A quality gas range and a real vented hood are worth every dollar.
- Save on the backsplash. A simple subway tile looks great and costs a fraction of a hand-painted or marble mosaic.
- Save on lighting fixtures. Statement pendants can be swapped later. Get the recessed cans right the first time.
- Save on the "dream" appliances. A $12K range boils water the same as a $2K one. Premium is worth it if you actually cook that way — not because a magazine shows it.
How to plan your kitchen remodel budget
Before you call a contractor, work through these questions. The clearer you are, the tighter and more accurate your quotes will come back.
- Set a real number. Not a wish. What can you actually spend without wrecking your other goals?
- Rank your priorities. Layout change, cabinet quality, appliance level, finish material. Which two matter most?
- Look at three or four kitchens you love. Save photos. This tells a contractor what tier you are actually shopping.
- Get two or three quotes from real remodelers. Not handymen. Someone who handles permits, warranties the work, and can show you finished kitchens in your area.
- Ask what is not in the quote. This one question tells you more than the total price.
